What is the Cause of Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia occurs when there is an imbalance between the hormones oestrogen, which promotes breast growth, and testosterone, which limits it.
It is common during teenage years and often resolves on its own. In adults, gynaecomastia can be linked to medical conditions that affect hormone levels, certain medications—including some cancer treatments, herbal supplements, and recreational drugs like cannabis—or obesity. Understanding the underlying cause is important in determining the most appropriate treatment.
