If you are considering liposuction or have recently had the procedure, understanding what the recovery process involves can help you feel prepared, confident, and in...
Fat transfer, sometimes called fat grafting or lipofilling, is a surgical procedure that uses your own body fat to add volume, shape, or fullness to another area. Rather than using implants or synthetic fillers, the technique harnesses natural tissue from your own body, making it one of the most versatile procedures in body contouring and cosmetic surgery.
What Is Fat Transfer and How Does It Work?
Fat transfer involves three stages. First, fat is harvested from a donor area of your body – commonly the abdomen, flanks, inner thighs, or knees – using a gentle liposuction technique. The harvested fat is then processed to remove excess fluid and damaged cells, leaving behind healthy, viable fat cells. Finally, the purified fat is carefully injected into the target area using fine cannulas, building up volume layer by layer to create a natural, balanced result.
Because the transferred fat is your own tissue, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. The procedure offers a dual benefit: slimming the donor area while enhancing the recipient area at the same time.
What Areas Can Be Treated with Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer is a highly adaptable procedure that can be used across a range of areas, depending on your goals:
- Buttocks: Fat transfer to the buttocks, often called a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), adds projection, shape, and fullness to the posterior without implants.
- Breasts: Fat can be used to add modest volume to the breasts or to improve symmetry, contour irregularities, or the outcome following breast surgery.
- Face: Facial fat transfer restores volume lost through ageing, particularly in the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes, for a natural, refreshed appearance.
- Hands: Fat grafting to the hands reduces the aged, hollow look that can develop as volume is lost over time.
- Body contouring: Fat transfer is used in combination with liposuction to sculpt and refine overall body shape, redistributing volume for a more proportionate silhouette.
Does Fat Transfer Last?
This is one of the most common questions people ask about fat transfer, and the answer is nuanced. Not all of the transferred fat survives the process. A proportion of the injected fat cells will be reabsorbed by the body in the weeks following surgery, typically around 30 to 50 percent. The fat cells that do survive, however, become a permanent part of the treated area.
Once the initial settling period is complete – usually around three to six months after surgery – the remaining fat is stable and long-lasting. The results can be considered permanent in the sense that those surviving fat cells will not simply disappear. However, as with any body tissue, they will respond to significant changes in weight. If you gain weight after surgery, the transferred fat cells may enlarge along with the rest of your body. If you lose weight, they may reduce.
Maintaining a stable weight after fat transfer is therefore important for preserving the quality of your results over the long term.
How Long Does Fat Transfer Last?
For patients who maintain a stable weight, fat transfer results can last many years and in many cases are permanent. The critical variable is the initial survival rate of the transferred fat, which depends on the technique used, the quality of the harvested fat, and how well the body heals in the post-operative period.
At Health Excel, Dr Leonardo Fasano uses meticulous technique to maximise fat cell survival, including careful harvesting, gentle processing, and precise placement of the fat in small parcels throughout the target area to encourage good blood supply.
What Are the Benefits of Fat Transfer Compared to Implants or Fillers?
Fat transfer has several advantages over alternative approaches:
- Natural results: Because the transferred material is your own fat, it looks and feels entirely natural – softer and more integrated than implants.
- No foreign material: There are no synthetic implants or fillers involved, which eliminates the risks associated with implant rupture, migration, or long-term implant maintenance.
- Dual benefit: The donor site is slimmed at the same time as the recipient area is enhanced, providing body contouring benefits in two locations simultaneously.
- Longevity: Unlike injectable dermal fillers, which typically need to be repeated every one to two years, fat transfer offers results that can last indefinitely once the transferred fat has integrated successfully.
Am I a Good Candidate for Fat Transfer?
The best candidates for fat transfer are patients who have sufficient donor fat available, are at or close to their target weight, are in good general health, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve. It is important to understand that fat transfer can add modest to moderate volume rather than dramatic augmentation, and that some degree of reabsorption is a normal part of the process.
A thorough consultation is essential to assess whether fat transfer is the right approach for your goals, or whether a combination with other procedures might give a better outcome.
What Is Recovery Like After Fat Transfer?
Recovery from fat transfer varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the areas treated. Most patients experience swelling and bruising in both the donor and recipient areas in the first one to two weeks. Compression garments are typically worn over the donor area to support healing and reduce swelling. Most patients are able to return to light activity within one to two weeks and to full activity within four to six weeks.
It is important to avoid prolonged pressure on the treated area in the early weeks to give the transferred fat the best chance of surviving. Your surgeon will give you specific guidance on positioning and activity restrictions based on the area treated.
A personalised post-operative treatment plan including lymphatic drainage massage can support a smoother recovery and help optimise the final result.
