Aqualyx vs Liposuction: Which Is Right for You?

If you’re looking to tackle stubborn pockets of fat that haven’t shifted with diet and exercise, you’ve likely come across two very different options: Aqualyx injections and liposuction. Both can reduce localised fat, but they work in different ways, suit different situations and involve very different levels of commitment.

Here’s how Aqualyx and liposuction compare, so you can make an informed choice about which approach is right for you.

What Is Aqualyx?

Aqualyx is a non-surgical, injectable fat-dissolving treatment. A solution is injected directly into small, localised areas of unwanted fat, where it breaks down fat cell membranes. The body then naturally processes and eliminates the released fat content over the following weeks, through the lymphatic system.

Aqualyx requires no anaesthesia beyond a topical numbing cream, no incisions and virtually no downtime, making it a popular choice for smaller, more targeted areas such as the chin, jawline, love handles or knees.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat cells from the body using a cannula, typically under local, twilight or general anaesthesia. Because fat is removed directly rather than broken down and processed by the body, results are more immediate and liposuction can treat significantly larger volumes of fat in a single session.

At Health Excel, we offer both traditional and VASER liposuction, which uses ultrasound energy to gently separate fat before it’s removed, reducing trauma to surrounding tissue.

Aqualyx vs Liposuction: Key Differences

Amount of Fat That Can Be Treated

Aqualyx is best suited to small, stubborn pockets of fat, think double chins, minor love handles or isolated bulges. Liposuction, by contrast, can remove considerably larger volumes of fat and reshape broader areas such as the abdomen, thighs or flanks in a single procedure.

Downtime and Recovery

Aqualyx involves minimal downtime. You may experience some swelling, redness or tenderness at the injection site for a few days, but most patients return to normal activities almost immediately. Liposuction, being a surgical procedure, requires more significant recovery time, typically seven to fourteen days before returning to normal activities, with final results developing over several weeks to months.

Number of Sessions

Aqualyx usually requires a course of multiple sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve the desired result, as the treatment works gradually. Liposuction typically achieves its result in a single session, although some patients choose to stage treatment across multiple areas.

Cost

Aqualyx tends to have a lower cost per session, from £200 at Health Excel, but the need for multiple sessions can mean the overall cost is comparable to, or sometimes higher than, a single liposuction procedure, depending on the area and volume of fat involved.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

As a general guide, Aqualyx tends to suit patients who:

  • Have small, isolated areas of stubborn fat
  • Want to avoid surgery and general anaesthesia
  • Are comfortable committing to a course of treatment sessions
  • Have realistic expectations about gradual results

Liposuction tends to suit patients who:

  • Have larger volumes of fat to remove, or want to reshape a broader area
  • Want more immediate, dramatic results from a single procedure
  • Are prepared for a short surgical recovery period

Every patient’s goals and body are different, and the best way to determine which treatment suits you is through a proper consultation, ideally including a physical assessment of the area you’d like to treat.

Safety Considerations

Both treatments are considered safe when carried out by a suitably qualified practitioner, but each carries its own considerations. Aqualyx can cause temporary swelling, bruising and firmness at the injection site as the body processes the dissolved fat, and results depend partly on your own lymphatic drainage and metabolism. Liposuction, being surgical, carries the general risks associated with any procedure involving anaesthesia and incisions, including infection, uneven contours or fluid accumulation, though these are uncommon with an experienced surgeon.

A thorough consultation, including a review of your medical history and goals, is the best way to minimise risk and set realistic expectations, whichever treatment you choose.

What Does Recovery Look Like for Each?

With Aqualyx, mild swelling and tenderness typically settle within a few days, and there’s no need to take time off work or normal activities. With liposuction, most patients wear a compression garment for several weeks to support the treated area and encourage smooth healing, with visible improvement continuing over the following three to six months as any residual swelling resolves.

Combining Both Treatments

Some patients choose to combine treatments, for example using liposuction to address larger areas and Aqualyx to refine smaller, more delicate zones. A well-planned post-operative treatment programme also plays an important role in supporting your results, whichever route you choose.
